The teacher training will be in person at the Radboud University Nijmegen from 1 to 5 November 2021. It will be hosted by iCIS the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences of the faculty of Science. We will use room HG00.068 during this Teacher Training. Also the lunches will be in this room (unless noticed otherwise). This room is located on the ground floor of the Huygens building, Heyendaalseweg 135, 6525 AJ Nijmegen. Turn left if you enter the main entrance.

An effective summer school has a proper distribution of stimulating teaching activities. A summer school is typically very demanding for the participating students, so a proper mix of work forms will help the students to absorb more knowledge and to enjoy the summer school more. To achieve an effective mix of teaching methodologies we will discuss the contributions of the school in-depth to optimize their presentation. We will determine effective and efficient exercises to process new knowledge.

All teachers of the summer school will bring a proposed outline and content for their course as well as the metadata about their course. What is the knowledge assumed by the students, what are the practical skills required, what software should they have and what programming tools can they use at which level?

Covid situation

The current Covid situation in the Netherlands was rather good. Currently, we see an increase in the number of infections and the number of people hospitalized. There are still very limited restrictions but this might change shortly after our event. Follow the basic rules: washing hands, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, not shaking hands, staying home and getting tested by the GGD if you have symptoms, and ensuring a good flow of fresh air indoors. Face masks are mandatory on public transport and at airports. A Coronavirus entry pass is required at indoor areas of establishments serving food and drinks. The EU Covid certificates should work, but I am unable to test this. Travelling to the Netherlands from the EU is possible.

Traveling to Nijmegen

Nijmegen is well connected and easily reachable by train, car or aeroplane. Convenient airports are:

  • Schiphol (Amsterdam). There is a direct train from Schiphol to Nijmegen that takes about 1:30 hour.
  • Eindhoven airport It takes a bus trip of about 20 minutes to Eindhoven railway station. From there it is 1 hour by train to Nijmegen.

Weeze (Flughafen Niederrhein also called Dusseldorf - Weeze Airport (NRN) in Germany) is close to Nijmegen, but has bad public transportation to Nijmegen.

Hotels

Nijmegen has a long list of hotels. The best deals are typically found online with one of the many booking sites. Some possibilities:

Travelling from the city centre to the university

General information about travelling to the university is here. Note that we will be in the Huygens building which is in another building as assumed in the global university link.

  • It is a 30-minute walk from the city centre to the Huygens building.
  • The most Dutch way to travel around in the city is by bike. Rental bikes are available at the main railway station and at Jasper fietsen.
  • By train you can reach the university with a 2-minute drive from Nijmegen to Nijmegen Heyendaal (and an additional 5-minute walk). There is a train every 15 minutes during the daytime. In the evening there is a train every 30 minutes.
  • There are frequent busses from the railway station to the campus. During rush hour bus line 10, the Heyendaal Shuttle, runs every five minutes directly from the central station to campus Heyendaal. The Huygens building is the first stop on campus (the second stop of the trip). Note that busses stop only on request.
  • There is paid parking at the university. They will charge you 10 euro per day if you come by car.

For travelling by bus or train you must use the OV-chipkaart (public transportation chip card). There are still ticket vending machines on bigger railroad stations that can produce a train ticket. You can also buy a ticket online. There is no alternative for the OV-chip card for buses.
